HENRI RIVIERE - Thirty Six Views of the Eiffel Tower
HENRI RIVIERE
(French, 1864-1951)
Thirty Six Views of the Eiffel Tower (a portfolio of lithographs) The series “36 views of the Eiffel Tower” clearly alludes to Hokusai’s “36 views of Mt. Fuji”.
“Henri Rivière encountered Japonism in late 20th century in the Cafe “Chat Noir” renowned for its avant garde and intellectual clientele and creative interaction between them. From then on the artist carried out a thorough research of Japanese art, especially Hokusai and Hiroshige, and became a key figure in the revival of wood block prints and multi-colour lithographs.”
