Best of YOUTUBE 2006

There was no bigger web phenomenon in 2006 than YouTube. In the first part of our YouTube special, here are our top 5 favourite video clips that kept us glued to our screens.

1 Boris Johnson “playing” football
Conservative MP Boris Johnson is good at many things – presenting Have I Got News For You, offending Scousers, looking like a chubby albino hamster. But playing football isn't one of them. In this pre-World Cup charity match against a German team he bulldozed into Maurizio Gaudino at knee-height, executing a tackle that you're more likely to see at Twickenham than Wembley.

2 BBC interviews Guy Goma
In one of the funniest media cock-ups of the year, BBC News 24 interviewed black Congo graduate Guy Goma – who was there to apply for a job – mistaking him for white internet expert Guy Kewney. Within days Goma had turned into a minor celebrity.

3 Star Wars Kid
This two-minute clip of a teenage boy pretending to wield a Star Wars lightsaber was viewed 900 million times, becoming the most popular viral video on the web according to marketing company The Viral Factory. Eat your heart out Darth Maul.

4 Geriatic1927
Proving YouTube wasn't just the domain of attention-seeking teenagers, Geriatric1927 – aka 79-year-old Englishman Peter – kept us all entertained with his fascinating video diaries, becoming the oldest, and probably unlikeliest, star of YouTube.

5 Squirrel plays football
If the feud between Arsene Wenger and Thierry Henry worsens don't be surprised if the Gunners make a bid for this nippy winger, who displayed his skills in a Champions League match against Villarreal in April.

6 Shape-shifting owl
What happens if you surprise an owl with a jack-in-the-box? It does a surprisingly convincing impersonation of the nation's favourite beanpole Peter Crouch.

7 Dubya's Double
Back in April Jim Nieb gave the world a second George W Bush when he brilliantly impersonated the President at a White House dinner.

8 Urban gymnastics
Our jaws dropped when we saw this montage of urban gymnastics, otherwise known as Parkour, in which loose-limbed daredevils somersault and cartwheel around cities.

9 Lonelygirl15
The year's biggest YouTube hoax was this series of video diaries from the 15-year-old “Bree”, otherwise known as New Zealand actress Jessica Rose.

10 The Numa Numa dance
A new dance craze hit the web in 2006 as Romanian teenager Gary Brolsma boogied to the Romanian pop song Dragostea Din Tei by O-Zone.

11 Trying to cancel an AOL account
Listen to the desperate and unintentionally hilarious attempts of an AOL representative trying to stop a customer cancelling his account.

12 Boy George cleans up in NY
When the ex-Culture Club star swept the streets of New York the world's media swarmed around him with glee.

13 Baboon fights a crocodile
See how one baboon avoids becoming a crocodile's takeaway dinner. His mate tries to rescue him when the croc attacks, but quickly scarpers.

14 CNN reporter leaves mic on
CNN Anchor Kyra Phillips livened up August by leaving her microphone on when she nipped to the loo during a speech by George Bush.

15 Aleksey Vayner's CV video
Spurning the usual two-page CV, US student Aleksey Vayner sent potential employers a video of him pumping iron, playing tennis and performing karate.
